 Staff Psychotherapist

John Brennan, JD, PsyD, LLP

John Brennan, PsyD comes to the Relationship Institute as he transitions from a career in law to psychology, a journey precipitated by he and his wife’s therapy with an Imago Relationship therapist and their decision to participate in a weekend workshop. Soon thereafter, John became a member of the Board of the Imago Relationships Therapists of Michigan as a legal advisor, completed a clinical training program on an educational track, and decided to return to school to become a couples' therapist.

John recently completed his doctoral studies at the Michigan School of Professional Psychology, including his dissertation entitled "Into the Lion’s Den: How Men Experience Hesitancy in Couples Therapy". John received the Marjorie Scott Scholarship for Excellence and is an Adjunct Faculty member at both MiSPP and Oakland Community College where he has been teaching psychology classes since 2007.

John previously completed both his Masters and his Doctoral practicums at HAVEN, focusing on counseling women and children who have been impacted by domestic violence, as well as facilitating group therapy for men who had been court ordered to receive counseling. John was also awarded the HAVEN counseling program’s Volunteer of the year award in 2008. John completed his internship at Gateway Counseling Center, where he also facilitated both an adult group and an adolescent group addressing substance abuse issues.

At the Relationship Institute, John works with couples, individuals, and families as they seek to negotiate and overcome the struggles which arise in their lives.

Dr. Brennan works out of our Royal Oak office.
