Mike earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s of Social Work degrees from Eastern Michigan University. He is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. Prior to arriving at the Relationship Institute, he assisted veterans and their significant others at the Veterans Administration for ten years and he worked at a private mental wellness group practice. While at the VA, he became an expert on addictions, trauma, and couples therapy. He has spoken on multiple occasions at the joint collaborative Veteran’s Administration/University of Michigan mental health grand rounds regarding topics relating to relationships involving substance use and/or trauma. In addition, he has conducted several relationship enhancement couples workshops.
Mike’s approach is accepting, compassionate, and holistic. The cornerstone of his philosophy is motivational, helping individuals and couples find a path that they can truly embrace. His integrative approach to therapy includes a broad range of evidenced-based techniques to include: EMDR, EDFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), Gottman method for relationships, behavioral couples therapy, CBT, and mindfulness.
Mike specializes in helping individuals (ages 14 and up) deal with trauma, addictions, compulsions, body-focused repetitive behaviors, bullying, depression, anxiety, pain, and sports & academic performance. Mike has significant experience in relationship enhancement for those who want a “tune-up” in their relationship. And he has expertise in working with couples who are dealing with more significant issues like infidelity, betrayed trust, intimacy concerns, communication breakdowns, role conflict, and addiction/trauma in the relationship.
